Sister City: Jiangyin – Peoples Republic of China
Jiangyin China is Alameda’s current active Sister City as recognized by Sister City International. This relationship dates back to 2006. Former Social Services and Human Relations Board member and now Councilmember Stewart Chen brought a proposal based on community interest in making WuXi Alameda’s Sister City. With combined efforts of Councilmember Chen, Jim Franz, City staff person Carol Beaver, former Councilmember Frank Matarrese and community leader Nancy Lee the exchange began. In October of 2007 WuXi Sister City Conference hosted an Alameda delegation which included SSHRB members Chen, Cathy Neilson, and Cindy Wasko, along with Jim and Jan Franz , Mayor Johnson and the City Council, and the City Manager and Planning Director. This visit led to identifying Jiangyin City, within the municipality of WuXi as Alameda’s Sister City. The memorandum of understanding establishing Jiangyin and Alameda as Sister Cities was signed in 2008.
