We've got a couple of events happening soon. Please feel free to join in on the fun as well as join a committee.
Saturday, June 3, 2017, 10:00 AM -1:00 PM - Araw Ng Kalayaan – The 5th annual flag ceremony at City Hall commemorating June 12, 1898, Philippine Independence from Spain. This free to the public event will include a formal program, entertainment and refreshments.
It is with great pleasure that I am announcing the approval of three new sister city committees. In March 2017, community members with interests in Yeongdong-gun, South Korea, Wadi Foquin, Palestine and Varazze, Italy submitted the selection criteria form and made presentations to the ASCA board of directors. It was a unanimous vote among the board members present to approve the three new committees and move forward with getting approval to establish three new sister cities. You can read more about our new committees here: East Bay Times
City staff has decided that each city should be presented individually to the city council for approval. The first committee to move forward will be that of Yeongdong-gun.
Yeongdong-gun is already a sister city with our most recent sister city, Dumaguete, Philippines. In fact, the Mayor of Alameda and the Mayor of Yeongdong-gun were part of the summit in Dumaguete in 2015. Mayor Spencer traveled to Yeongdong-gun with two members of ASCA in late 2016 at the invitation of Mayor Park.
The City of Alameda and ASCA are now preparing to host an 11 person delegation from Yeongdong-gun July 2-5, 2017. If all goes as planned, the two mayors will be signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on July 3rd making Yeongdong-gun Alameda’s third active sister city. The delegation will be participating in the Mayor’s 4th of July Parade and the Coast Guard Festival following, and touring our fair city.
Mayor Park has extended an invitation to members of ASCA to attend 50th Nangye Traditional Music Festival in Yeongdong-gun, September 21-24, 2017. This trip will conclude with travel to our Jiangyin Sister City in China, Sept 25-30, 2017.
Current dues paying members who are interested in joining the ASCA delegation to South Korea and China should understand that airfare and hotels may be at your own expense and that participation with and/or contribution to an ASCA committee may be required.
