Welcome to the Alameda Sister City Association

The Alameda Sister City Association (ASCA) was established in 2006 by a group of community members who believed that cultural exchange could bring the people of Alameda closer together. They recognized that the City of Alameda possesses many valuable attributes and opportunities worth sharing across international borders. By fostering shared business practices, educational resources, and cultural understanding, they hoped to contribute to a more peaceful and connected world.

ASCA was originally part of Alameda’s Social Services Human Relations Board but became a self-sustaining nonprofit organization in 2014. Today, we continue to operate as a volunteer-run organization made up of dedicated community members.

What Is a Sister City?

A sister city relationship is a broad-based, long-term partnership between two communities in different countries. These partnerships are officially recognized when the highest elected or appointed officials from both cities sign an agreement of cooperation.

Cities can have multiple sister cities, and these relationships often involve a wide range of community members—from a handful of volunteers to hundreds. Participants may include nonprofits, municipal representatives, businesses, educators, and other civic leaders.

Each sister city organization is autonomous, allowing it to focus on the programs and themes most relevant to its community. Activities often include cultural events, business and trade initiatives, educational exchanges, and other collaborative projects.

Our Role in the Community

The Alameda Sister City Association (ASCA) serves as a liaison between its community committees and the City of Alameda. Our role includes establishing new sister city relationships, coordinating international delegation visits, and developing programs in collaboration with local and international partners from the community, business, and government sectors.

Part of a Global Network

ASCA is a dues-paying member of Sister Cities International, a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. This national organization supports a global network of sister city partnerships and citizen diplomacy. Today, more than 400 U.S. communities participate in over 1,800 partnerships spanning 140+ countries, fostering cross-cultural understanding and collaboration around the world.
